I am a textile artist and the Head of Textiles at a secondary school in York. My journey in this field began with a degree in Textiles and Surface Design from University Centre Somerset, where I graduated in 1994. In addition to my teaching role, I am an active member of the York Textile Artists and The Society for Embroidered Work, which promotes and celebrates excellence in stitched art on a global scale.
My creative process is deeply inspired by the places I visit, where I capture spontaneous moments through photography. These images serve as starting points, igniting ideas that evolve into distinct textile art pieces. I often work on multiple pieces simultaneously, embracing a dynamic and experimental approach to my craft.
Rustic textures and the effects of aging are central to my aesthetic. I am particularly drawn to corroded and tarnished surfaces, seeing in them a potential to be transformed into expressive textile compositions. Colour and texture are the defining elements of my work.
Throughout my practice, I employ a variety of textile techniques. Some pieces begin with hand painted backgrounds, onto which I apply free-motion embroidery, using the sewing machine as a drawing tool. In other pieces, I work from the reverse side, enabling the use of thicker threads that introduce delightful, unexpected textures. Currently, I am experimenting with layering, cutting, and slashing fabrics to reveal contrasting textures and colours. I also incorporate techniques such as screen printing and rust dyeing to add further depth and character to the fabric.
